Years ago I read somewhere that it was an offence to write a cheque if you knew there were insufficient funds in your account at the time of writing. Is it therefore an offence to pay by debit card if you have insufficient funds in your account but you know that your salary will be paid in the next day?

Depending when the money is taken you could be left with charges. But you could just have your card rejected when you try to pay.

Agree with above, it's more than likely to be refused.

I think this is the case in France not UK.
If you attempt to pay with a debit card without adequate cleared funds it is likely the payment will be rejected.

Majority of debit card payments will decline if there is not enough funds in your account. An exception is the pay at the pump petrol as it only checks for £1 initially and then lets you purchase fuel and the amount you spend is then debited in a couple of days, by which time you have been paid.

My only concern would be the bank would charge you for exceeding your overdraft or going overdrawn should a transaction be autorised and it is more costly for you, is it really worth it?
