I have applied for a couple of credit cards over the last 2 years and always refused. I tried with my bank HSBC and got turned down due to suspect account activty
Do you know what this activity is, and if so, is their assessment correct? If you've actually had a few black spots on your HSBC account then it's understandable they might turn you down, but if your account has been generally well operated it might be worth asking HSBC for more information and possibly rechecking the decision?

In my experience HSBC have been quite good at telling customers what their "internal view" looks like, if you go into a branch and ask them.
  • When I spoke to them they said that the answer is computer generated and all they could see was that it said about suspect account activity. I asked what they meant so they looked at my account and they could not see anything and told me I ran my account very well. As I said before I have never had anything not paid, gone into my overdraft, no charges..I have money left in my account everymonth. I even have an ISA with them. I am a little concerned though why the computer came to that conclusion about my account....very strange.

You mean without an overdraft facility?

Even so, if you have a chequebook and/or debit card (full feature, not Electron for example) then it is indeed possible to overdraw the account because both these are/may be guaranteed* forms of payment...therefore the bank has to honour any such payments made with them.

Even with no overdraft facility in place, it's entirely possible that the presentation of an automated payment (DD/SO) may create an overdraft situation whether the item is paid or unpaid.

    * In the case of cheques, only for the next couple of months or so.

None of my current accounts, (LTSB & Santander), both with overdrafts show, ever, on any of my credit files the amount I use of them, if any, at any time.

All three credit files show the balance as £0 at all times, showing neither the limit or the usage. I have just checked with a friend and she is the same?!
