Fairyface ,
I have been exactly where you are right now, I felt there was no way out the mess we were in, I used to sit up at night crying worrying myself sick and feeling so depressed.
We entered into a TD and although its hard and like you feel sometimes it a struggle , having major panic about large things breaking down , like car , washing machine etc there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have found joining in some of the challenges here have help enormously with me actually enjoying
popping small amounts in my saving jar , buying tiny bits an pieces for xmas by looking at the grabbit posts, by setting myself the NSD challenges etc
I am also inspired by the stories on here. I read them daily and realise we are not alone ,there are so many people in exactly the same boat , people that truly understand , so keep posting , keep asking
I wish you all the best

the strain you put yourself under is emmense. sadly, my only advice is heads down, keep at it one day at a time, you wll have good and bad days and then one day you will realise you are making progress. good luck xHighest Debt £581,000 Nov 08 and now owe nothing! yes really! Dear Fairyface,
I owe £27K and am a single parent (aged 54) my daughter doesn't know how much debt we're in although she's 15 now and maybe getting some idea. I've had debts for about 10 years now, since I've been on my own so I can really sympathise with your situation.
Apart from cutting back I can really recommend upping your income (see thread above in forum section). I am doing the election count in my local constituency next thurs which is quite well paid by the council, also I do care work for an agency and am a personal assistant to someone with MS in my local area.
I think cutting back is fantastic but it certainly takes my mind off my own problems when I am working with other people, esp if they are elderly or disabled because all my debt probs get put into perspective. Having said that i don't know how old your son is but I couldn't have done this extra work when my daughter was younger as I've had no family input at all, so you definitely need some help at a younger age.
First step is recognizing the problem, next is cutting up all cards if you can if overspending was the issue (if gambling seek help on another forum on this website).
When I see posts like yours I feel I am not alone and that is a huge help to me - also if I was stupid with money I'm not the only one so no point in beating myself up about it, plus I am dealing with it now.No more credit cards for me.
Have a look on the Up Your Income thread and see if you can get anything from it.
Good Luck I've got my fingers crossed for you!:A

Welcome on board, Fairyface. When it comes to being stupid with money, I have a degree in Stupidity from the University of Stupidity in Stupidtown, but I now have a formal arrangement for clearing my debts and will be debt free in 3 years. I have learnt to be a bit more savvy with money and enjoy finding out new ways of living well without it costing an arm and a leg.
If you post a statement of affairs, as suggested earlier, people can help with suggestions for cutting costs so you can put more towards paying off the debts. And of course if you destroy all credit cards you can turn your mind to planning your first Christmas where everything is paid for up front and you don't dread the bills in January. (Sorry to mention that C word this early in the year but clever people pick up odds and ends throughout the year that go towards presents so they are not sucked in by the mega shop hype nearer the time.)
Get yourself over to the Old style forum for some useful tips and support. Good luck and chin up - one day that nasty old debt will be gone and you will be free again. One life - your life - live it!0
