Opus BT to Halifax CC not allowed (info)

Hello all.

I got a letter from Halifax CC's with two BT offers. One 0% for 12 months and one at 6.95% (fixed) for the life of the balance (3% transfer fee on both).

Anyhow I chose the fixed interest rate (no chance that I'd pay of the whole balance in a year :(). I was going to transfer an HSBC, Virgin and Opus (formally Citicard) balance (plus a proportion of an Egg CC balance).

However as soon as I mentioned the Opus card the guy on the phone from Halifax said they are not allowed to transfer the Opus CC balance as part of the BT.

I was rather puzzled by this and would be interested in knowing if anyone else has experienced a simialr issue?

I mean I could understand this if Halifax owned Opus but I wasn't aware that they did.

TIA

Bill

Opus is operated by Halifax :o

You could use your Virgin or HSBC card as a "mule" to the Halifax 0% card.

Either that, or once you've paid off your HSBC and Virgin cards, call them up and see if they have any repeat offers available for 0% balance transfers :o

    Good luck!

  • Ah thank you - mystery solved (I should have done a bit of research :o). Though I do wonder why the chap I spoke to from the Halifax couldn't have told me that was the reason I couldn't transfer the balance from the Opus Card?

In the end I went for the fixed rate, life of balance transfer as I wouldn't be able to pay off the whole BT and I should end up paying less interest in the long run than If I'd opted for the 0% offer.

Of course (because I lacked the self-disipline/common sense to save up for 'stuff') I have other debts. However I'm slowly pulling my self out of debt to the point that the light at the end of the tunnel is no longer that of an approaching train ...

I would imagine Halifax don't want it known that they're associated with "the likes" of Opus. If I were Halifax, I wouldn't :p

Good luck with the rest of your debt, you'll get there soon enough. Do see if you can get a repeat offer from HSBC of MBNA for Opus once you've transferred those balances to Halifax, though. MBNA are especially forthcoming with repeat offers ;)
