Missing BT Deposit

When I moved into my current property 4 years ago, I needed to pay BT a deposit of £50 to start the agreement.
I paid this over the phone on a debit card, but shortly afterwards moved my banking and now don't have that account or the statements.
Anyway, it appears now that there is no record of the deposit, since BT start a new 12 month contract on the anniversary of the initial agreement and they don't seem to have access to any of my information prior to mid-2008! They don't keep historical information!!!
I am now moving out, and have terminated the BT account as of the 13th May, and obviously need to resolve this beforehand... and I am very reluctant to just accept the loss.
Anyone know what I can do? I only seem to get through to a foreign call centre, and there is a breakdown in communications.
Thanks!

I had a similar situation to you - after a lot of digging, it turned out BT never processed the payment of the deposit onto my debit card. So all my indignation in trying to get the deposit refunded were for nothing! Seemed very bizarre at the time... but unless you definitely saw it on your bank statement, maybe it was never charged!0
