What's the best telephone provider for my Nan?

Hi,
My Nan just wants a land line which she only uses rarely anyway. She's with BT at the moment and her bill for the last quarter was around £50, so she's looking for something cheaper.
Please can someone suggest the best provider to switch to or if it's worth calling BT to see is she can get her bill reduced?
Thanks,
Joe

Does she pay by Direct Debit? If she doesn't, she could instantly reduce her bill by about 10% by changing to doing so.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Does she have Sky.
The one way to cut her bills instantly is to stop making so many calls, thats a horrendous amount of money. Is it cheaper for her to ring at night, after 7pmmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I wouldn’t have called £50 a quarter horrendous most providers charge at least £10 for line rental. You can save on BT line rental by paying 12 months in advance.0

Not enough info given. At £13.60 a month, £40.80 of that is just line rental.
Which tariff is she on?
If she makes more than £5 of chargeable landline calls a month, she'd be better of on the Anytime tariff at about a fiver a month. So for about a fiver per quarter more than she's paying now, she can have unlimited landlne calls 24/7, and not have to worry about the bill.
And as Heinz says, switch her to monthly whole bill DD as well.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I suppose its all relative.
My actual telephone calls per month are around the 50p mark
because i make the majority of my calls on a week end or after 7 during the week. Im with Sky and get basic broadband free too.
And sorry, I misread the post, I missed the 'quarter' and presumed the OP meant a month:omake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks for the advice. She doesn't pay by direct debit. She can't remember exactly what her call charges were but they were very low because she makes very few calls.
It sounds like working out a better deal with BT is the best option.0 -
Is it possible your Nan may qualify for BT Basics?
If she makes very few calls this could be ideal
http://www.bt.com/includingyou/other-products-services-bt-basic.html?s_cid=con_FURL_calls_basicYou can usually get BT Basic if you're claiming one of these benefits:- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Employment Support Allowance (Income related) or
- Pensions Credit (Guaranteed Credit)

Thanks for the link. I've printed the PDF and given it to her and she's going to find out if she qualifies.0
