Hi, and welcome to MSE. :)

Why would anyone be giving them away?

We have three growing in pots outside our house in Spain, but I don't think they would grow in the Uk - too humid
    and not sunny enough.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

You can grow them indoors here, on a sunny windowsill.

Because they're a pain in the neck?

I've got one that'll be going on the compost heap before much longer. Damn thing keeps growing. :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Ask on your local Freecycle site . Aloe Vera plants give off little plantlets from the base when they get to a certain size and most people want rid of these otherwise they would have an Aloe forest within 2 years. They are half hardy but will only survive very light frost .

I have an aloe and I'm in Crawley.
It will sprout in a few weeks to months I think (it is on a bounce back from being a bit weak). If you want one of the sprouts you are welcome to it.
    Let me know.
