Free / OpenSource invoicing software ?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for the above ?

My other half is a sort of self-employed virtual pa and is looking for an easy invoicing solution. The software needs to let you

a) design the template *
b) add/edit various 'products' *
c) email invoices out *
d) ideally let the client pay the invoice online (but not sure if getting paid via paypal is very professional)
e) track the status of any invoice *
f) generate report(s) of totals invoiced, paid, etc and possibly broken down by client. *

[ * is essential, d would be a nice to have ]

Is she living in a dream world hoping to get all that from open source ?

So - anyone got any invoicing software recommendations ?

I am not sure if she is looking to go down the "full self-employed accountancy package" route. She just needs a simple/easy way of generating ad-hoc (and even regular) invoices with a quick way of getting the info she needs for self-assessment purposes.

Also, from a self-assessment POV, is there any issue with her being paid into her personal bank account ?

TIA for any help.

Regards,

Adam Brunt

I don't have any invoicing recommendations but I can't see a problem, re self-assessment, with using her personal bank account so long as she keeps accurate records. The problem might come from her bank if she has a large number of transactions - they *might* eventually ask her to open a business account.

Sounds like you're after an ERP system, something a bit more kickass than just using Excel for invoicing. You might like to try OpenERP, Opentaps, or online (not open source, not free, but pretty decent) ERPLY.net (like an online lightweight SAP)

Thanks for the replies so far.

I have also been pointed in the direction of FreshBooks and/or FreeAgentCentral.

Anyone heard/use of either of them ?

Not sure if it meets your needs but http://www.gnucash.org/ has an invoicing feature. However its more focussed on being an accounting package with invoicing secondary. I'm currently looking at it instead of getting a sage accounts package .... but haven't had time to do much playing yet.

Had a quick look at this and it is not clear if it is HMRC compliant with regards to VAT. Do you know if it is?

I haven't really had the time to look. I quickly installed it and I'm sure I saw a UK VAT module. Whether its compliant or not I don't know.

Edit : Found this http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Pas_76 doesn't look like they know i.e. they haven't been through a certification process but it maybe compliant with PAS 76.
