Caught in high charges or 12 month contract - no choice

Our BT landline contract is due to end 14th May. We have broadband via 02 which we are happy with (that contract finishes on 9th September).

We are paying £19.35 a month in BT charges for landline, anytime calls and £1 for international.

We are hoping to emigrate in September/October this year so don't want to get tied in to another 12 month contract for obvious reasons.

We were hoping to move to 02 for our phone line but can't as although they will let us have a monthly contract, we were told by the 02 customer service it means we will have to "upgrade" our existing broadband contract - and this has to be 12 months.

I then phoned BT to ask what happens on 14th May, to be advised that we then move onto a monthly plan and won't be tied in to a monthly contract. So I then asked if we could reduce to standard landline with weekend calls included only ie £12.35 a month, to be told if we "down grade" after the current contract ends, we will then set ourselves up for a new 12 month contract!

This means we are "stuck" with BT for the landline and have to pay for anytime and international call plans which we don't want.

Any advice would be appreciated if anyone has found themselves in a similar situation?:(

I would advise that you move your phone line to a company that doesn't have a tie in period. There are probably others, but I know with the post office you only have to give a months notice to cancel and no minimum contract.

    Thanks Karen42

Does anyone know if my 02 broadband would work if I migrated from BT to a Post Office landline?

It should do. Any ADSL provider who is available on a BT line will be available on a Post Office line - as the PO offering is essentially rebadged BT.

Post Office seems very suitable for your requirements. The only problem is that when your line is switched, you may lose your broadband due to incompetence or vindictiveness and need to get it restored. Consult with both O2 and PO about this
