Hi Poppyjay,
Should not be a problem http://www.toolstation.com/documents/search/index.html?searchstr=ball+valve&submit=Go0 -
Yes ball !!!! one for a header tank .They have been out three times and this I's now what they think the problem I's but don't have the part on there huge van.0

If they've been out 3 times already and now only THINK thats what the problem is then it seems as though they (the plumbers) need replacing irrespective of whether they carry the part as van stock.
What was the problem BTW?

Over flow from tank I'n the loft leaking when we have heating/hot water on.0

Is either of the two tanks in the roofspace getting warm or hot? What I mean is is hot water coming up either of the vent pipes into either tank?
If the cylinder vent pipe (over the large coldwater storage tank) is passing hot water then the primary suspect is a perforated coil in the cylinder.
If the CH vent pipe (over the smaller feed and expansion tank) is passing hot water then the system is pumping over. There are a number of potential causes for this but lets deal with them if that is what is actually happening.

No both tanks I'n the loft only have cold water I'n . X0

Oh good - that can be quite dangerous particularly if its the CWST thats getting hot. In that case then the ball valve MUST be the obvious culprit. I only question why its taken them 3 visits to make that decision but they must have their reasons.

In response to your question, there are no hard and fast rules as to what spares a plumber will carry in his van. My plumber carries very little, preferring to see a job and then get the appropriate part. To have a large stock holding means having a lot of money tied up. Some plumber will carry quite a lot of parts.
However, as has been identified, it seems that its the plumber that needs replacing first!Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Not my choice of plumber or my money just want it fixing x0
