homesweethome wrote: »Hi, it's the first time, I've posted something so not sure that I've done it correctly ~ anyway, the reason that I'm posting, is that I've received a letter from Aktiv Kapital addressed to me in my maiden name (I've been married 15 years) saying that I owe over £2,500 which relates to a Bank of Scotland account.
I was quite irresponsible in my early 20's, so perhaps I did owe money to them back then, but that is over 20 years ago now! I'm now obviously, more responsible and married with children, so haven't got spare cash ~ can they really chase a debt which is so old? Shall I just ignore it?
Your responses would be appreciated ~ thank you.
Hi.
Have a look at the info and letters in this link.

Thank you ~ I've been out all day and have felt quite sick to the stomach when I've thought about it. Your link is very good. The hybrid letter, which states "no knowledge and statute barred regardless" seems the most relevant, but then as it was 20+ years ago and they have have sent it to me in my maiden name, shall I just ignore and bin them or will that make things worse? I wonder if they are just randomly trying their luck and will go away if they get no response? Or ... perhaps I should just put "return to sender, not known at this address" on the next letter ~ which is kind of the truth, as my maiden name hasn't existed for nearly 16 years! I don't want to dig myself in a hole though.0 -
You could just ignore it, or return it as you say.
Aktiv do an awful lot of "fishing" attempts like this.
You may get a series of letters. Sometimes they are ones that seem to be getting increasingly desperate; i.e. offering daft discounts/offers if you will only pay them something. Or it may be idle threats of court action, where, as this debt is so old, there is no real chance of them actually doing it.
If you can cope with the occasional daft letter than you could ignore? But obviously being prepared to respond with the appropriate letter if it gets too much.
Or you could respond now and hopefully finish the matter straight away.
So up to you really? Depends on how you feel about it?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks for replying ~ still not sure what to do ~ sometimes I think less is more, so I'm tempted to completely ignore it, I guess a "return to sender" response could enter into more correspondence, so I guess ignore them, but if they start to become ridiculous and start telephoning me (I suppose they could find out my telephone number) or turn up at the door, I'd have to up the anty as such ~ what would you do?0

If you had already responded to them in some way, then it would be easy, as you would already have "bitten". No point in ignoring it then, as it will just lead to more hassle.
If it was me, I might well send the letter.
That is just me though. I'm used to dealing with the hassle and bullwarks these people produce, so I would tend to want to nip it in the bud so to speak.
I understand that others may prefer to wait and see if they lose interest. They might without a "bite" at this point.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks so much for your advice, I am in the same situation ! been married for years and not heard a sausage for 14 years now this !
Many many thanks I shall just ignore it, I do not want to enter into any dialogue with them, I am not well and I dont need the hassle.0
