Windows Messenger makes it easier to get through any firewalls, as explained in this article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301529 - and there are no limitations using it.happyhero wrote:Also do you know what the differences would be doing it through messenger, ie easier or more limited etc?0 -
You may want to try some of the other suggestions first, logmein/rd using messenger etc.. (are encrypted, so your session can't be intercepted.) If your dad is behind a router (get him to do start, run, cmd, ipconfig -- if his ip address is 192.x or 10.x vnc won't work), then logmein or rd will be a better solution)
The vnc site isn't the most intuitive..
http://www.realvnc.com/download.html
leave form blank, click proceed to download
click download next to VNC Free Edition for Windows
tick I accept at the bottom, and click download
If you do use VNC, don't forget to turn the server off (on the remote PC) when you have finished your session - it's not something you want to run all the time, if you aren't protected behind NAT.
There are also these variants, which offer some advantages over the basic vnc

Thanks guys I have tried Logmein and it worked pretty easy. I am no expert on this remote business but the good thing I found is that we didn't have to mess about with firewalls and I also got it going without too much brain power in just a few minutes, plus once I was in it was just like being over with my Dad again as far as working on his PC for him is concerned. I dont know how this program compares with the others but I cant see any major limitations at present, so hopefully I will be able access everything as if I was there.
Cheers again everyone for all the advice.0 -
