Freecycle exists to keep usable items out of landfill. If you are asking for or accepting items from other freecyclers for resale you are expected to be honest about your reason for wanting the item.

    Why?

And anyway the Freecycle website isn't there for that, its there as a means of making money for the owners of the site, you only have to look at the amount of adverts and sponsors on their site to see that.

Copy and pasted from freecycle site.

The basic mission of Freecycle is to keep items out of landfills.

If you are an EBAY seller, thrift store owner, or a reseller of any kind, FULL DISCLOSURE OF YOUR INTENTION TO SELL ITEMS RECEIVED FROM FREECYCLE MEMBERS IS REQUIRED UP FRONT. You MUST disclose your intent to sell either in your original Wanted post or when responding an offer so the donor can make an informed decision as to whom they give their item to. Members have the right to enquire as to the intended use of any item they offer. If you believe an item of yours has been sold with out you being told then PLEASE contact us and we will look into it.

    Thats why.

If you're average Joe Public doesn't follow the laws of the land and lets face it the 30mph speed limit tends to go out of the window if you're late then guidelines on a website don't stand a chance. And what can they really do send you a nasty email or ban you from the site, big deal.

If you give something away you no longer have any say as to what happens with it. If you take certain thing down your local tip they get sold on, but they don't tell you this as your driving in with that old knackered computer or tv. And what about when you recycle your weeks worth of metal cans and glass, what you think they process that out of the goodness of hearts, no they do it because they make money from it. Yet I don't recall see on any the literature I've had through the door about recycle and how many millions it will make for someone else, no it was all about being green and environmentally friendly.

Why do people ask questions and then argue when they don't like the answers given to them?

If I have an item, EG the table, I would rather advertise it, and when people email me, expect them to be HONEST about why they want it, I then choose whom I believe to be in most need of it. That is MY perogative as the persno giving the item away, I might feel that some poor person with children and little money could use the table more than a charity could use a few pounds to employ one of its store staff selling the item on. Thats up to me, What I dont like is DISHONESTY. And had the person who took it said "im going to sell it on because Im hard done to and dont have much money" instead of giving me a story about how they need it so their KIDS have something to eat from instead of eating meals on a concrete floor, I would have told them to get stuffed, and gave it on to many of the other worthy enquirers.

You may liken it to a "quirk of human nature" however I liken it to FRAUD. You might aswell go to these peoples homes asking for money saying your something you arent, its tantamount to the same thing.

I have no problem with you selling things on if you disclose this to the freecycler, some of them dont care. Im not in great finances myself, Im behind with bills, and the mortage, and costs are rising, Still I would rather show a bit of goodwill to my fellow man by giving them something they need if I no longer do ( In my case the table was too big for my tiny property) than sell it, and dont think anyone has the right to abuse that.

And OP, if you really think youre actions are acceptable, please let us know which freecycle group your on and your username so people who dont want their kindly gifted goods being sold can tick you off their lists.

Being judgmental and criticizing somebody is NOT answering a question.

I'm on the West Bromwich, Wednesbury & Tipton group under the user name of purple40 and I still don't have any problem with my actions.

I've always found human nature to be interesting and how the scale of an action can move something from being shrewd to being unacceptable. To give you an example of what I mean this site promotes 'tarting', as I'm sure you know the moving of the balance on your credit card to a 0% interest card and its seen as a very good idea. But by doing so you stop the big organisation behind the card from making money from interest charges, they're giving you 1000's for nothing and thats shrewd and savvy and yes that's something I do to. But scale that down to a one to one basis and it becomes unacceptable and I've never worked why, if they can't afford to give it away then why are they and surely once an item is someone else's possession then its up to them what they do with it. I did think it's because of intent, that you know your going to sell it but the same could be said about tarting as you know you're doing it to not have to pay any interest.

I also find carboots can be awkward. Many times I've seen someone on tv brag about buying something for 75p knowing it was worth 100's and we all sit there and think lucky sod wish that would happen to me. But they never tell the seller that the item is worth considerably more and that they should get it valued, no they rip their arm off and leggit. But isn't that morally wrong? Human nature again.
On the first point, credit card companies invite people to take up an offer, there is nothing untoward there.

On the second point, I'd say the difference would be if it was priced at that or you were making an offer. If you were making an offer of 75p on something you knew to be worth £75,000 then that isn't really on, be it a dealer or a little old lady or anywhere in between.

It's probably a lot simpler for a website to boot you off than it is for you to get a speeding fine for going 1mph over the speed limit, so maybe not the smartest move giving your id after you've wound up several people on here.

Yes they do but they do make the assumption that people will stay with them after the offer ends so they can make some money. An introductory offer to entice people in. If everyone swapped cards and never paid any interest on their balance credit cards companies would have to find other ways of making a profit or the cards would be phased out. I wonder if you were to tell a credit card company that you were only going to stay with them to use their 0% offer before moving your balance elsewhere how many would accept your application for a new account!

There are plenty more groups and websites and I can always create other ids so no real hardship.

Ah yes at last someone smart enough to cotton on to me. In any given argument I always take the role of devils advocate, just for the sport of it.
