Infobarrel give you 75% which is one of the best splits of all the sites.
Remember that percentages don't necessarily convert in $$$.

I write the content for my website myself, and it is very easy to get a page indexed fast and ranked number one on Google so I get more traffic on that item than any other page in the world.

How is it easy to get a higher percentage than anyone else? Write the page on a keyword that nobody else uses e.g. “isle of white motorway patrol”. Do a blog on that, and you will get 75% of the readers. It won't translate in lots of money though.

If infobarrel gives you 75%, but only gets a fifth of the hits of another site, you will only get a fifth of the clicks, and hence the other site will pay more money for any cut over 15% compared with infobarrel.

Your earnings from article writing depend on three factors.

The amount of traffic to the site.
    The percentage you get.
The appreciation you get from your readers.

My understanding is that article writing takes time and effort to begin with but can generate a steady income stream with less effort as time goes on, and obviously you develop the skills to write articles faster too.

Two things that improve your writing skills:
    1. Writing (obviously); the more often you write, the better you get at it.
    2. Reading. The more you read, and the more different things you read, the better you will write.

Agreed that your own site obviously gets you 100%. However for me the reasons I would rather write for an existing site.

I have no site building skills.
I'm short on time - one of the reasons that I would like to build up a small income from this is to cut down on the number of hours I work at extra jobs.
I write on a number of random topics - not enough to build a site around but slot in well on an existing site.
I'm still learning so using an existing site is useful for me.

However, if these aren't issues for you then I can see why building your own site is better.

I couldn't agree more on the last point - I'm reading and writing whenever I can :)
