Wasn't surprised to read this was Barclays. We "popped" in to branch to get me added to the wife's account after we got married...took everything with us and the guy said "I've got an appointment in 15 minutes...I'm not sure I've got time to see you "....we said "we just want to convert one account to a joint..." and he said "Oh, OK, I'll squeeze you in".

I actually felt really sorry for the people who'd actually booked an appointment, as it took well over an hour for the guy to sort us..Amongst taking all my ID (again, I had an account with them already), trying to sell us EVERY extra product under the sun....savings accounts, credit cards, home insurance, phone insurance, car insurance, life insurance...it just goes on...wander off, come back, wander off...Unbelievable.

We went into Nationwide to do the same thing, were in and out in 5 minutes.

I am a Branch Manager for Barclays by the way and agree to these types of transactions all the time.
You'd have thought so but unfortunately not all of your colleagues in branch appear to agree.

I had two similar issues with adding my wife to my Barclay's accounts:

    1) Adding name to savings account - told by call centre to just drop in and it can be done. Go into branch 1 and get told they are too busy but the branch down the road is much bigger and always have staff for dealing with drop ins (or they could do an appointment in a few days time).

Go into branch 2 and get told it is a legal requirement that you must give 48 hours notice if you want to add someone to the account and so you must make an appointment and come back. Legal requirement disappeared when loud mouthed latina starts talking about appalling service in the middle of the busy branch and a "senior relationship manager" adds her to the account there and then

    2) Adding name to current account - told by call centre that simply need wife to pass ID and fraud checks to be added to Premier Life account. Go in branch, get told that as she doesnt qualify for Premier Life in her own right that they will not add her to the account

Maybe your husband failed checks. Did you go in to check on the status, or did he? They won't tell you if he failed anything, but it seems it was still the wrong thing to say! Long shot, but you never know.
