acoustic double glazing

Having read on these forums, that I may benefit SOUND wise, by having a new sealed unit made, with the normal size of 4mm.,20mm gap, 4mm.,being substituted by 4mm.,18mm gap,6mm.

Well, the unit has been made, and I am surprised to see, that the 6mm.glass is in fact, 2x3mm. (bonded together ?),18mm.gap,4mm.

I have no issue with receiving 2x3mm. in place of 6mm., my question is, should this 6mm.sandwich, be on the outside of the frame, or does it not matter one jot ?

Thanks in anticipation.

The 6mm is laminated glass - it will have a thin film of plastic as the filling in the sandwich. This is normally done for safety or security - it stops the glass shards leaving the pane if it gets smashed. In your case it adds an extra different material for the sound to travel through and so will improve the acoustic insulation (by a tiny amount but it's the thought that counts). Assuming that it's not there for safety reasons (say on the inside the window is close to the floor but outside it is high in the air and so the inside pane needs to be safety glass) or security reasons (in which case it's probably the outside pane where you need the protection) then it doesn't matter which way round the unit is.

Ditto McAzrael, but also laminated comes in two forms one has a hard thin layer (normal) and the other has a thicker, spongier layer (special) the later is called stadip silience and is used to deaden sound in libraries air ports.

Basic rule the wider the gap the better the moise reduction, and having two sheets of different thickness makes a difference.

dont exclude secondary as an option

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.
