Portsmouth and surrounding area

My OH has been offered a place at uni in portsmouth. We are looking to buy a house this summer (and have a morgage promise) my problem is I dont know the portsmouth area at all (so will probs rent when we first move there) but does anyone know which bits we should be looking at.

We dont mind living further out havant/fareham etc as long as not to far from a station so OH can commute into uni.

Is there any areas anyone would recommend or anywhere to avoid?

Thank u

I was a student there, try looking in Southsea, its where most students live.
  • Thanks for your reply, perhaps I should add that he is not a typical student as he is 30, and Im in my 20's so looking for more of a family home.

Plenty of families live in Southsea.
  • I would suggest that you rent for at least a year if not a bit more. I moved to the Portsmouth area from London about 18 months ago and am sooooo glad that I held off from buying too soon. I was initially drawn to Southsea because it was lively with lots of pubs, cafes, independent shops etc. But the houses are small with small gardens and it is VERY studenty, a bit dirty and parking is a nightmare. In my opinion Fareham is much nicer and that's the area in which I'm now looking to buy. There's more room to breath. Havant/Emsworth are also quite nice. On the plus side house prices are slowly drifting down so no need to rush into anything.

ps. I'm mid 30's my OH late 20's.
  • Good sized family homes in Copnor/Baffins/Hilsea area. A little bit out of town but you can avoid most of the football/seaside traffic. Really good bus routes and the train stations are good.

Southsea is alright for renting but it's a bit studenty or expensive.

We're looking at buying a house in the Copnor area with 3 beds and a garage at the moment and our budget is abuot £175k-£200k. It's really close to hilsea station and there are three major bus routes on the next road.

Me and my OH are mid-20s. The great thing is your about a £5 taxi ride from Southsea/Town for going out but get to come home to a lovely quiet area at night as well :)
  • Depending on what sort of area you are looking for there are plenty of sreas in and around Portsmouth.

On the island itself the bus network is relatively good until about 8pm, so if your OH is not fussy about what public transport he uses you could look out towards Baffins, Ancorage Park, Moneyfields on Portsea Island or Drayton, Widley, Fareham off it.

Gosport should not necessarily be discounted either as the ferry service runs from 0530 to midnight and there are reasonable properties within walking distance of the Ferry (or FirstBus offer Hampshire bus travel and inclusive ferry on their season tickets).

All really depends on what sort of "non-typical-student" family house you are looking for.
