in simple terms what does this mean? All dy for about 30 goes I have this message comes up. When i switch on its trying to do a checkdisc on my drive f. it says press any key to cancel but goes ahead anyway. Then it goes through a routine an after a couple of minutes I get the above message. Then nothing happens. I have left it for 30 mins and nothing, repeatedly switchinh off but still end up with same screen.
I dont know if when themessage comes I should leave it longer or if its stuck.
a few weeks back had a major prob with pc and it man fixed it with the restore disc. since then its been fine but now stuck in a loop. Is it broken? is it something I can fix or does it need IT help.
For info its maybe 5-6 yrs old, tower type running windows XP home edition.
Thanks

Personally I would leave it longer than 30 mins.
According to MS the backup copy of the beginning of the master file table was corrupt. Chkdsk is correcting this error.
Disk checks can be notoriously slow, so I would give it an hour at least - it may just sort itself out.
You can usually tell if it's working by looking if the disk activity light is doing anything.0 -
maybe I was brirng too hasty then! will leave it and see what happens.0

If you know what type of Hard drive your PC is running, it might be worth running the diagnostic tool of the Hard drive manufacturer. If you have data you need to keep, then I would certainly remove it to another partition. Then , I would download and run this little utility It's free and possibly repair the partition for you0 -
Depending on the size of the hard disk, leave CHKDSK running overnight.
Then look in the System Event Log (I think) for the record which gives the CHKDSK statistics.0
