Debit refund showing as money out?

I bought some goods last Thursday on my Santander debit card. I then returned 2 items as they weren't suitable 2 days later.

I received the debited refund slip and thought no more about it.
On checking on-line banking today I noticed the refund was showing as a debit not a credit.

I rang the bank and was told as it was over a bank holiday weekend the refund would be sorted in a couple of days.
No doubt it will but what a strange way of doing things.

Are you sure its not the original debit showing? That will still come out, then the refund will go back in separately

Unlike debits, refunds are never authorized, they do not get added to your available balance. They only show up on your account balance once they are properly booked, a few days later.

If you had the refund on Saturday, it cannot show as yet. What you see now on the available balance is the original debit (which does not get cancelled). If you had the refund two days later as the debit, the refund will show uptwo days later. Only then, will debit and refund cancel each other out.
  • Thanks for the replies, I'm sure it will work itself out.
The original purchase was for more than the refund as I only returned part of the purchases.
If I'd not have looked at the statement on-line today and had waited a few days, all would have been made clear. just couldn't work it out at the time:(
