Debit Card Payment

Hi,
Just wondering....
I made an online purchase in January this year with Game. The money usually comes out of the bank account the day they post the game. This time round they didn't even put a hold on the money and no money was taken.
In March I phoned Game and told them the money hadn't been taken and was there a problem somewhere. I was simply told the transaction had gone through OK and the game itself had been sent. Sometimes transactions can take up to six months, they can't hurry it along I just have to wait.
After this I phoned the bank to see if they had a record of it and could hurry the payment up. The person I spoke to hadn't actually heard of a merchant not taking their money or putting a hold on it before dispatching goods. In short they said to phone the merchant which I'd already done.
The money is sitting in my bank account still waiting to be taken and I am wondering just how long the merchant is going to take or can take before the money is going to go out. Is there a limit on the amount of time a debit payment can take before it isn't honoured by the bank? I am concerned that there is this debit card payment floating about and if I was asked to pay again how would I know that the original wasn't going to go through and I'd end up paying twice.
Hoping someone can shed some light on this for me.

The original transaction can be processed up 6 months later. After that they would have to ask for authorisation again, but legally speaking they can pursue you for payment for 6 years. I would just leave it for now, but keep the amount in your account in case they do take it unexpectedly. If after 6 months it hasn't been processed, you could contact them again to see what they want to do.0

How annoying!
I've allocated it in the excel thingy I keep for my money so I don't count it as money available. I'm so used to people taking or at least holding money straight away when I buy things.
Thanks for your help, I'll call them and the bank again in a couple of months if they still haven't taken it.0 -
