Best breakdown cover?

We need to renew our breakdown cover by 4th May and want the cheapest that will give us what we need.

We have only once got the car looked at at the side of the road. Most times when we have called breakdown services, they just turn up with a tow truck and take you back home or to the garage.

My dh does an 80 mile round trip to work every day, mainly motorway driving. We need a policy that will get the car towed off the motorway to a garage of our choice, and onward travel. We don't see the point of paying to get the car ' fixed' at the roadside as this very rarely happens. Can we just pay for recovery rather than 'mechanic' help? Or is this daft?

BTW, we are driving a pretty reliable little car now, and not an old banger like before. 2006 Honda Jazz.

I'm with insurance choice. Cost me £29 a year (although they've changed the pricing now, but only for older cars) and I've had to call them out twice, both times the service was fine, the second time I had to be towed 100 miles. Crucially, it includes onward travel if your car can't be repaired at the roadside/locally.

Just had a look. They seem to be what we are after. Thanks. Our renewal quote for this year is 88 pounds, so that is much better.

We've used Autoaid successfully over the last 5 or so years.

£36 per year, but covers both husband and wife in any car. You can either get them to call someone out, or if you have a friendly local garage call them up and get them out yourselves. It also includes a limited home breakdown cover.

The only drawback is that you pay for the repairs/recovery there and then, and claim it back. However we have done this twice, and each time the money has been refunded by the end of the following week.

Feedback on this site for them is pretty good.

Autoaid's also good as you say, but if you can be bothered paying and claiming back etc. Might be worth trying your existing company also, they'll usually reduce the price if you call up and threaten to cancel, but probably still won't be as cheap as IC or autoaid...

http://www.rescuemycar.com/Breakdown/ Were quite cheap for me, approx £37 for home assist/national recovery and most importantly, it's NOT!! pay up front and claim back so works just like the RAC/AA :)

Does that policy have a £40 excess though? Worth noting that IC has a similar policy with an excess which is cheaper - if you don't mind paying an excess each time you call them out...

I had a look at the article on here which gives you some good places to check over.

I went with Start Rescue. They worked out half price of my quote from Greenflag as they do a second car for half price.
Also find a voucher code for 20% off via google! :)

I've never called them out though, so can't say how good they are on that front!

  • I went with Auto National in the end this year. £66 all in for the top level of cover. Some good write ups and from Which? so we'll see. I doubt they'll get a call though.
