Recall for rescue dog.

Lovely vision
However, both mine are terriers and honestly Ive had the border stop dead in his tracks literally inches from the rat he was chasing (I was more worried about Diggs getting bitten than the rat). He has brilliant recall, absolutely 100%. Ralph, does a "whatever" now and then when we call him, but as he gets older/calmer, he is virtually there too. So, as said, it does come down a lot to the individual dog. 0 -
please do tell re the liver, boiled & roasted - I've recently got a rescue dog & once he's up to speed weight wise I want to start training him on recallThanks some lovely tips on there. I have lovingly cooked liver the doggie way via the internet, boiled and then roasted in oven. The only trouble is that he smells it and wants to empty my pockets prior to the walk! Today he has been into my cooking cupboards and demolished the silver cupcake containers! Maybe two year olds were easier............!
I`ll definitely try the long lead idea which is probably better than the retractor lead isnt it? Are they called lunge leads? Off for walkies now so will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again

This is the one I use. I then freeze them and just get out what I want when I want some. Cut them into very small pieces, about one-third the size of your little finger nail. It may seem small but it's just to give a taster of something they will come back for more.0 -

Recall with a terrier on a mission is a challenge, to put it mildly.
oh yeah - definately
Before our wee boy went blind if he saw a football he'd be off and nothing could bring him back
and for such a small dog they can run
OH and I were like ninja's in the park - one eye open at all times to spot someone coming in with a ball and whoosh! - on goes the lead before it hit the grass.0 -

Thanks TomsMum for doing the link - that is exactly the site that I used but I really struggle with hyperlinks so perhaps you can tell us how you did it....please.
I also wanted to add that I got a harness and a whistle yesterday and both have helped enormously. He doesnt react to the whistle when on a walk yet but certainly responded well when out in the garden.0 -

Errrm, I'll try. I know it in my head but it doesn't always come out as I want it to
. Here goes -
Click on REPLY and when the box comes up you will see at the top a white rectangle with Fonts, a white rectangle with Sizes, a capital A and then a white smiley face. Underneath the white smiley face is a blue world symbol with what looks like a chain link.
In another browser have open the website you want to link to. Copy the URL of that website from the address bar at the very top of that website's page.
Go back to your reply box and highlight the word you want as your link, e.g. Click here for Google. When you've highlighted the word, click on the blue world symbol I mentioned above and a box will open that says "Please enter the URL of your link". There is already HTTP:// in that box. Delete that and then paste the URL you copied from the website page and click OK. If you don't delete the HTTP:// that's already in the box the link wont work as you'll be adding another http:// from the URL you're adding. You can Bold it as well to make it stand out, or change the colour.
Hope that makes sense.I also wanted to add that I got a harness and a whistle yesterday and both have helped enormously. He doesnt react to the whistle when on a walk yet but certainly responded well when out in the garden.
Well, you're making progress. Just continue practising. If he's 100% recalling in the garden (can you make the distance longer, or go and hide somewhere?) then he ought to do it off lead. Are you going to the woods, beach, field for this and not just pavement walking? If he doesn't respond when out do something to get his attention - jump up and down and make silly noises (doesn't matter if you look a bit of a wally
) then start running the other way. If I have a problem with Poppy being distracted by something else I either go "POP, POP, POP, POP" or the one guaranteed to get her back is "BYE BYE THEN" and walk away.
You'll get there in the end.0 -
TomsMom- wish I could thank you twice but thank you for your post on both counts!:beer:0

Our cocker had selective recall! Trained to retrieve for shooting best example was when a friend took quarry from her and didn't thank her. The next retrieve saw her running off into the distance with the quarry and no amount of calling and whistling would bring her back!
She returned some hours later looking very pleased with herself!0
