can you do a transaction over the phone and not be asked for the CVV number. I'm curious coz i paid the dvla £20 fee and i wasn't asked for the CVV number just the card number + the expiry date. Surely they [ the dvla ] should off took the CVV number as well.

Some retailers don't ask for the CVV number anyway so it's being a bit paranoid really (IMO) to think removing it will prevent fraud on your account. It will just make retailers suspicious when you present a card which has been tampered with.

They can but they pay a higher fee per transaction as this is not classed as a 'secure transaction'.

david thanks for that. btw i meant card number not car number lol. So will my transaction still go ahead with them [the dvla]
You would think a company the size of dvla would ask for CVV as it's an important number on the Credit/Debit card isnt it!!
I really thought Egg would block it going through and as they havn't contacted me, it must be ok.

Not all companies are signed up to Verified by Visa or the Mastercard equivalent.

And the DVLA has powers just to cancel any licence etc where the transaction is later reversed - as they are not sending out goods that become untraceable ater delivery they really don't need to use CVV.

would I be committing some heinous crime

s1 Criminal Damage Act 1971. It's fairly heinous - covers smashing up bus shelters, bulldozing someone's house, tossing my stamp collection into the sea (very heinous indeed and until recently a hanging offence).

BUT, seriously, don't worry. As noted, it might give you some grief if a shop assistant spots it. I can't think of any claim (civil or criminal) that could arise from this.

In the situation raised in the first post (restaurant/petrol station) this should be a chip and pin transaction and the retailer should not actually be handling or having chance to look at your card at any time. You put it in the card reader, you take it out again. No skimming is possible and they don't get to see the signature strip numbers.

Also Pauline what's with "Replies which focus on the question asked will be welcomed." Why don't you lighten up a bit?

@dj87 I think what the poster was saying is many of the card readers sort of expose the 3 digit code even if you keep hold of the card, especial when they are on the counter top.

My wallet seems to have a magical way of rubbing off the code on the back of some of my cards. You can still see it by tilting the card, guess that is the impression by what ever they use to print the code on the back.

Not had a problem with them yet. If I saw it myself I might be tempted to Code 10 it, especialy if there was anything else worrying (High value items etc).

You would think that no one would try to defraud the Goverment but this does happen a LOT!

To be honest, you may not think of this - but because they don't ask such a stupid question of the CV2 code you are paying more in the longrun if you do pay by card for them not asking for this.

Most Merchants are set-up to ask for this code and the acquirers will not allow them to remove this prompt as part of the agreement these days.

Makes it easier to do fraud through them than another provider which may ask for this, and if they are doing fraud just think how much each Chargeback due to this is costing you also?

Don't know if this has changed also, they still using that nice telephone number that makes them £££££ each year from you too?

Not really worth the effort to deface the card and make it look even more suspicious?
99% of your face to face transactions here in the UK will be Chip and PIN so you keep hold of the card. The card number is not printed on the receipt so the retailer wouldn't have this information.

Even if your card did get used in a Card not present environment, the card company would just charge it back so would be covered for fraud.
