I think she wasn't adding anything to the soap, just unwrapping it and letting it dry out. Dried soap lasts a lot longer than 'fresh' (softer) soap.

ETA: if you google the phrase "how to make soap last longer" that's exactly what is said over and over again - unwrap bar soap and leave it to dry out before starting to use it!

The formulation of Pears soap changed a year or so ago. The new version is nothing like the older one. You used to be able to put the remains of the previous bar into a hollow on the back of the new bar, if that makes sense. Just keeping soap in the airing cupboard is supposed to make it last longer.

I agree and the smell changed. I stopped using it then but it always evoked memories of my childhood.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I can't stand the smell of coal tar soap!

Thanks for all the replies, I did think that the idea I came up with seemed a bit of a faff! And I always wondered why it was shaped the way it was, but it makes perfect sense now:rotfl:.

I've just been to check and it really doesn't smell like it used to, does it:( Why do companies do that,. I was looking forward to a short amble down memory lane every time I used it :)

I have always stuck the remains of the old bar onto the new bar (whatever the make of soap). Er, doesn't everyone?

Pears and Wrights have both changes - the can't use coal tar anymore in Wrights and I loved both those soaps but they really aren't the same anymore

I loved Pears soap- I think the change is in the amount o f rosemary used.Doesn't smell as fresh as it did-more bland. I now look round for Rosemary organic soap.
I also like carbolic soap in the kitchen or toilet to clean surfaces.
If you are interested in traditional scents used therapeutically in soaps/disinfectants I recommend 'The Fragrant Pharmacy' by Valerie Ann Worwood Much cheaper to achieve traditional scents in personal/home cleaning using aromatherapy safely:) also much better for the environment.

Well, I do, but it would be so much easier with a ready made dip, rather than trying to stick an oval onto a block, iyswim.

As an earlier poster mentioned she would probably have unwrapped it and left it in the airing cupboard to dry out and harden off, my grandma used to do this with all soaps to make them last longer.
