Silly BG direct debit
Options
just signed over to British Gas and got my proposed DD payments........£33.50 per month! Horaaay!!
however:
I know we use approx £1150 pa on Gas and Elec (told them how many KW pa we use when we switched) and can only assume that the DD would go up massively towards year end to cover the extra usage.
my question is why do they set it stupidly low?,I always thought DD was an easy way of spreading payments over the year without getting any (really) nasty suprises year end.
I have mailed them to ask them to raise my payments, but can see how folk could get into probs if they left things as BG call it.

The £33.50 sounds more like elec only. Phone them up and demand the DD is increased to what you think is about right.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

When I joined EON for dual fuel they sent me a very low figure for DD (As I thought!) -but it was only for gas as the switching dates were different - I got a second letter a week or so later with another figure for elec. and they actual set up one DD for the total amount.0

...my question is why do they set it stupidly low?,...
To get people to switch to them.
It appears to be very effective doesn't it ..."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
There are still loads of naive people who think that their DD covers usage!! e.g. They are paying £100 monthly to Firm A, Firm B offers to set DD to £50 monthly - their conclusion is that Firm B's prices must be half that of Firm A.0
