Switching phoneline from BT

Please could somebody help with my situation.
I am currently 15 months through an 18 month contract with BT for my home phone. I am paying around £15/month for evening+weekend calls, so its not the most competitive deal. I did take it up because the phone line at my house needed activating and BT waived the £125 fee.
My broadband provider is Orange (Ive had no probs with them).
Now that BT are hiking prices again, I have read that I can cancel without any termination fees within the next 10 days. I would like to switch my landline to orange (I can upgrade my package with them at any time online).
What is the best way for me to do this without losing my broadband/phone line for days?
Or am I just better off waiting until my BT contract lapses in 3 months and contacting orange to perform the switch?
As a slight complication the BT line is in my fiancee's name and the broadband in mine.
Any help gratefully received!

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

hmm, not an orange fan then
Like I said I personally have had no bother with them and numerous problems with BT......
my original question remains, would I be likely to lose my phone line for days if cancelling with BT and switching to Orange? If anyone has gone through this before would appreciate your experiencesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. If you switch using a MAC then you won't get any 'day's' downtime at all. The normal downtime on the day of migration is a couple of hours at most.
But don't say that you haven't been warned re Orange:
