Hairdressers or home hair maintenance?

There is another post on here on the same topic but I didn't want to hijack it. It has made me think though. I stopped going to the hairdressers regularly a while ago but have only just started going again. I did start colouring my own hair (paying about £6 for a box of hair colour) and went to a walk in salon to have my hair trimmed now and again (costing about £6) and I would trim my own fringe inbetween. I quit using salon products and just used Simple shampoo and the conditioner that came with the hair colour. It saved me a fortune and my hair seemed to be in better condition.
But then I got fed up of colouring my own hair and not being able to get it all over, I worried that my hair might be getting out of condition and decided I needed the hair salon again, I also fancied plum streaks and can't do that myself so I went back to the hairdresser I went to before, feeling quite embarrassed about going back after a break, though my friend who goes to the same one made the appointment for me and eased the awkwardness for me.
However, the first time I went back I had a trim and blow dry (cost £30), I only had the very ends off by the way. I went for the colour a few weeks later (cost £54). Now I am back in the expensive cycle of spending this money every six weeks when my roots start to show. I have also started using the salon products again. And to be honest I don't think my hair is any better condition than before, but the colour looks good and I love the pampering. I wouldn't feel at ease breaking off from going again now the hairdresser has given me advice and got me going again. Does anyone else haver this dilemma between maintaining their own hair and going to the salon regularly.

Have just recently started getting my hair coloured and have been horrified by the price. And I've only a few grey hairs, what worries me is what happens when I get more and more. Will be interested to hear if there is any etiquette on this too....0

I go to the hairdressers for a cut colour and blow dry it costs £30 and i usually tip £2. i think id rather go to the hairdressers knowing my colour is done properly and how i wanted it with no mess than risk a diy disaster. i do like the experience also.0

I've started going to a local college for a cut and blow dry, costs me £10. The only problem is that it takes ages but the end result is good. I colour my own hair.Sell £1500

As you said, you enjoy the pampering, it makes you feel good. The other question to ask yourself is can you afford it? If the answer is yes, then why not carry on? I home colour my hair, get it cut at the hairdressers about every 10 weeks, but I do have my nails done every couple of weeks. I feel I am worth it. x0

I colour my own, do my own brazilian blow dry and go to get it cut at the hairdressers maybe every 3/4 months.
I usually have it dyed at the hairdressers once a year just because it's nice sometimes:j0 -

I've just had my hair done this week at the hairderssers with a view to colouring it myself when the roots show through. I have brown hair with a few greys, I have been having an all over colour with foil highlights which looks lovely but works out at £10.00+ a week, or £500.00+ a year, so this time I'm lighter brown all over , no highlights and am looking for a mobile hairdresser to come and do the roots0
