It depends on what the self employment is though does it not?
As clearly she will be selling somehing on behalf of someone ? Ie she is not getting commission only for selling her own belongings/ work ? She starts next week and calls it a job. She gets paid by someone else.
it might be called self employment but it smells like a job to me
I'm not really concerned with whether it should or shouldn't be an employed or self-employed position - that is a whole other discussion more that the OP gets the correct advice for the situation they're in.
The OP has stated their earnings will come from self-employment - and therefore they must follow the correct procedures for the self-employed.
Many such sales "jobs" are on a self-employed basis - it's up to HMRC themselves to regulate this not the workers themselves.
