My mcafee has not prevented an attack on to my laptop. And their customer service said they could remove it if I pay a fee? So there software costs £35 it doesnt work and then they want to charge me to remove a trojan. strange

I would for one. Have used Avast for years (free version) and apart from a dodgy update they released a few weeks ago, never had an issue...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I've started using Avast this year. It's fine, does it's job. They've released 3 bad updates in a one month period though, so quality control is becoming an issue. I only use it for the webshield & network shield, which you don't get with the free version of Avira Antivir. The defaults are set in such a way that the average user well protected 'out of the box', but it's worth setting heuristics to high on each of the realtime shields.

Avira Antivir free is the superior pure virus scanner/guard, provided you set heuristics to High and check the box pertaining to "potentially unwanted programs" - which is off by default and is needed in order to stop the rogue antiviruses that are going around. They really need to set their defaults better.

Have you removed the trojan from your system? If not, I'd do that first and worry about a new antivirus program later.
