I'm having a Humanist wedding, still fairly formal, and if I deny my mum the opportunity to wear a hat she will go apoplectic!!!! Just kidding, but she cannot wait to wear a hat - she's been waiting a while, to be fair.

Depends on what your mum is comfortable with - my best friend's mum wore a very small simple fascinator to her daughter's wedding (which was in church), and looked fab.
Stuff 'what the majority do';
get your mum to try on hats and fascinators aplenty and decide which suits her better - some people look great in hats, some just don't!

My Mum is wearing a fantastic fascinator-but then she loves them and it is very her.
I think your Mum should do whatever she's comfortable with, she needs to be happy with how she feels on the day, she have enough other things to be thinking about and doesn't need to be worrying about whether her hat/fascinator is sitting right, annoying her etc..

Thanks ladies, I think shell be more 'herself' in a fascinator... Think shes thinking back years ago when all mothers of the bride wore hats!0

Just echoing whats been said above really! Don't think there is any right or wrong.
My mum is wearing a hat... but she loves hats, so its perfect for her. Of course that will be coming off later so I'm sure some sort of fascinator other hair decoration will be replacing it.
Your mum should do what ever she wants - she will still look fantsatic as mother of the bride!:)0 -
Your Mom should wear whatever she is comfortable in - she gets to set the hat rules as mother of the bride
We are getting married in a church & my Mom isn't wearing a hat, she hates wearing them. She is thinking about wearing a fascinator but isn't sure, may not wear anything.
MIL2B is wearing a BIG hat because she loves them

As the others said - there is no right or wrong. I wore a hat to my eldest daughters wedding 5 years ago, and will be wearing one to my youngest's wedding next year. I don't know what my outfit will be like yet but it will definitely involve a hat cos I love them!
Your mum should to go with what she's comfortable with so that she can enjoy her role as MoB
If swimming is good for your figure, can someone please explain whales?0 -
We are having a none church wedding also, but still fairly traditional. My mum is wearing the biggest hat she can find, not to be out done so is mother of the groom! But then, they both like hats so your mum should do whatever she feels comfortable with!

She should wear or not wear whatever she wants. Doesn't matter if she's not following the majority - she's the mother of the bride, so she's entitled to stand out anyway
It's more important she's comfortable - I love a wedding as a chance to wear hat or fascinator as I adore wearing them but other people absolutely hate having to wear anything on their heads 0 -
I tried persuading my mum to wear a hat but shes not having any of it! I think I've talked her into wearing a fascinator though
