Very disappointed with benefits for self employed

From what
I can gather on the new universal credit coming in, in 2013, self employed people will not get any tax credits.
Providing you do some hours a week you will be entitled to UC from 2014.
They are removing the hours barriers (16 + 30) so you could be working say 10 hours a week self employed, say a taxi driver earning the same as minimum wage and the government will top you up with UC.
Happy days for the S/E doing a few hours a week when UC comes in. :beer:0 -
Thanks for the reply. Not looking to hijack the thread
I thought after 2013 there was no new claimants allowed for Tax Credits? Is that in so far as new claimants must claim under the Universal Credit rules?Under universal credit rules:
if you are claiming you work 30 hours, then you multiply 30 by the national minimum wage (£5.93 at today's rate but probably more when universal credit comes in). This is your assumed (minimum) weekly profit from self employment.:):)0 -
If the self-employed are thought to be working such a small amount of hours - they will then be subject to the conditionality rules and have to actively seek other work as well. I don't know what level of work is thought to be acceptable though!:DNPowerUser wrote: »Providing you do some hours a week you will be entitled to UC from 2014.

I think new claimants from 2013 will go straight onto Universal Credit. Existing tax credits claimants will be moved over to universal credit sometime in/after 2013.

Sixer, I didn't want to go down the road of bank financing as I basically want to try and have no debt as I dont have any otherwise, I have tried to look for grants and funding but so far have come up with nothing.
There was me thinking the primary aim of the welfare system was to provide for the needy and all along it was supposed to be a venture capital provider. Surprised that they don't have a representative on Dragon's Den.0 -
Well according to the CAB briefing which is available online. All self employed will be assesed as earning minimum wage of £243 a week and entiled to £6 a week Uc0
