curtain pole joining splice

Hi

I am putting together the two poles that come with the Persia 28mm diameter curtain pole.

It comes with a joining splice for the two poles. If you click in the link you will see it.

Now to me the obvious way to do this would be to put the splice in the poles exactly half way

however the diagram (no written instructions) shows the splice sticking out of the first pole with only about a third showing to connect to the second pole

has anyone fitted one of these to let me know how its done...ta

ps you need gloves cos its sharp!

cheers
