New front doors cost a bomb

Just had a quote from two separate companies for around£2,500 for a blinking new front door. I nearly dropped. The existing one was a bit old, a bit shabby looking and frame and trim at the bottom were all dinged and dented so I reckoned on a new one but not at that price.

But one or two people suggested I try to revamp the old one which I've done - new frame, new glass, new trim at the botton (to catch the rain) and it looks great. But I would still like to know why doors are so expensive. It might be cheaper to get a used one and doll it up. Just thought you might like to know.

i just had a front door replaced but it cost me £900 supply and fit although i have had quotes in the region of £2,500.

My advice to anyone wanting a new door would be to go local and stay away from these big national companies that offer 'amazing discounts' because they tend not to be that amazing!

I agree entirely. I've had a quote for a new front door at £1,000. How can they justify that cost? Why are these new composite front doors so expensive???

1000 for a composite sounds about right to be fair

I paid c900 for a UPVC with stippled (?) glass by a local fitter last week...

Iwill probably be buying a handmade (to current building standards) wooden stable door and expect to pay around £800 (ex VAT) including the frame, from a local firm.

Wickes have front doors from £200 for upvc to £561 for hi security doors.

All you would then need is a local fitter.
