Thank you all very much for your replies.

Macman is correct; it was PC World and I found the salesman very evasive, he was more interested in whether I was a business customer and when I said I wasn’t his interest faded quickly. It’s a shame that he couldn’t have given me the information that you all have given to me.

Thanks TangleFoot for the link to Amazon, where I can actually buy a Windows 7 OS disk, I think that will make life so much easier in the long run.

As to building a new tower, I wouldn’t know where to start, but I’d really appreciate anyone’s thoughts on which tower to buy as to reliability.

    Thanks.

as well as reliability dont forget to take into the after service eg when something goes wrong or you need assistance with something

Try reading some reviews of cases and other related components, then find someone who actually builds systems with them. This looks like a pretty good place to start.

Many Dell PC's come with the option of a Windows reinstallation CD/DVD either included or an option at about £5 (not all models do though)

It's usually a Dell branded version of Windows 7 OEM

JJ Egan, in answer to your question, “Why a tower why not bog standard size PC.”, I’m not sure what you mean.

Tower cases come in several sizes including full, midi and mini. Full towers can be several feet high, though you're unlikely to see one sitting under someone's desk - they're usually used as servers.

When I visited one well known shop today, I was told by the salesman that no towers come with a Windows 7 Operating System disk or any sort of recovery disk now.

^depends on manufacturer/ many expect u to purchase cdr discs and to make your own //
