Car insurance for couples

Hey all
Just moved in with the gf (ah bless) and converting from a car each to a shared car. We're both currently with Admiral on a multicar policy which was surprisingly cheap.
We're now speaking to them about having just the one policy (for the one car) but we want both drivers to be able to drive other cars (3rd party) as we can currently. They say this is impossible but it can't be surely? Makes no sense...
Do you know of any companies that offer this?
I'll be using the work phone so much it will melt on Tuesday but I wouldn't mind being able to shortcut the calls and go direct to someone who offers this.
All advice gratefully appreciated.
many thanks
Brian
PS Also their NCB policy is that for the un-named policy holder they lose 1/2 yrs NCB per full year the insurance is not in their name. Is that standard policy?

i found in my family, under 25 they couldnt get cover to drive any other cars, now over 25 they dont have a problem with this cover, cis, churchill i know for sure offer it
sorry just re read your post. i am not sure if my family have cover for main driver only to drive other cars, i am sure someone wll come along on here and advise you correctly.0 -
Some of the very high end companies do that and also give you fully comp rather then third party cover for the driving other cars cover but you'll probably find it will be £££££££££££
All you can realistically do is ring round and see if you can find an ordinary firm that will do it although I don't remember seeing anyone that does. If you really really really want it I don't suppose there is anything to stop you having a policy each.
The NBC thing sounds like complete con, if she's got x years NCB then she should be able to get a letter stating that which she will be able to use with other company just like any other sort of NCB0 -

My OH and I simple alternative the policyholder each year to keep the NCB current.
They are generally valid for 2 years, so swapping every other years, keeps both NCBs valid.0 -
Go and discuss with a specialist broker. Our motor policies are insured with the policyholder being Mr and Mrs X. This means that we are covered for social, domestic and pleasure and personal business use regardless of which vehicle we drive. We also have driving other cars cover on each of the policies.
We could insure in single names but when we did this several years ago I was a bit worried about the personal business use if I was driving the car insured in my OH's name - hence the joint policies.0 -
My policies have always said the "policy holder" is entitled to drive other cars not the named drivers.
My mother had the same query a few years back, She was told no she was not covered to drive other cars.
Unless she change the policy to her name. But then my father would not be covered to drive other cars.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

The reason you both can't have DOC is because it applies to the policyholder only... now that your both moving onto 1 policy.. only one of you gets it! Simples
In regards to the NCB, when you cancel the secondary policy you get to keep your NCD for 2 years before it expires... Admiral will simply issue a letter confirming how many years you have. Never heard of any of this 'lose 1/2 years NCB per full year insurance is not in their name etc..' (Worked for the company for 2 years)0 -

Unless you do what we did and have the policyholder shown as Mr and Mrs X in which case we both have DOC cover! (But not all insurers will entertain this, hence the statement to go and talk to a broker)!0 -

Why is this important to you? Do you both frequently drive other cars?0
