Hi - this is for an elderly friend of mine who wants to consider a cheaper package than BT and possibly getting broadband. Would you advise for phone on its own and for the two together. After the landline his calls for last quarter where about £21, £10 of which to premium rate no.s £9 to uk landlines.

Have had a quick look and it appears Primus is the cheapest and Plusnet for broadband - is this correct???

Thanks a lot - Urk

Broadband is exchange specific, so no overall best deals exist. Do an exchange search on www.samknows.com for your available LLU providers, these will probably be the best deals.
If he's spending £9pm on landline calls, the he's clearly on the wrong tariff and should switch to an Anytime tariff, which will be around £5pm for unlimited landline calls.
Plusnet is only £6.49 if he is on a Market 3 exchange, much higher on Market 1 or 2 exchanges.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Personally Id go with plusnet for both as they do internet for £6.49 and phone is £11.00 is with free evenings weekends , with their 3 free months internet deal it works out a good saving and as they are BT really anyway they are pretty good with probs Ive found.
They have UK based support and a great online forum for any probs too and control panel is easy to use for a pensioner , my mom loves it.

If you have your own router or buy one rather than take the fre router then its also just a monthly rolling contract .

You just need someone to refer you and use the offer link if you want the 3 months free but might be worth a look , only thing is if you do sign up dont do what some do and chose the really cheap internet chose the better package to start with after all you are getting it free , you can then check useage during the 3 free months and the first payable month drop it to the lower cost package if your useage was low enough , its a 2 click setting .

Ive always been shocked why some chose the lower internet during their 3 free months when you can change package monthly ;)

But not everybody lives in a £6.49 (Market 3 Area),and line rental is now £11.99 a month.

yes thats true but a trial sign up would tell you that you dont have to sign at final page , I personally am not in cheapest area but was still a better deal and much faster / reliable than previous isp and I like the no contract so I can change if they go pear shaped , although most of family get it cheaper as they are in cheap area :)

the 3months free makes it quite a bit cheaper if you base it on 12 months of use

Thanks for all the tips everyone. He doesn't spend £9 per month its per quarter on uk landlines. Does anytime calls cover premium rate calls? It would be cheaper then (£9 landline + £10 prem calls per quater.) Thanks for the Plusnet tips he seems to be in the cheap area. Urk

    BT's Unlimited Anytime calls plan covers 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 calls (NOT 0843, 0844, 0871, 0872, 0873, 09 or 07 calls).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Even if he's only spending £7 pm on calls, he'd still be better off on Anytime at a fiver.

Just be wary about Primus' customer service - search on these forums to find out more

Beware of going with Plusnet for the phone package as they DO NOT have the option to bar any premium rate calls dialling from your own phone.:(
