Soaking a dish washer tablet in it overnight didn't work. It's like the metal has just changed colour.
There must a scientific reason for it, I've,boiled gammon joints in it numerous times and it's never gone black. The only difference was this time I left a big metal serving spoon in the pot slightly wedging the lid open so it didn't over boil, I wonde if the metal of the spoon has reacted with the metal of the pot?
I quite like it in here, there seems lots of helpful ladies, I might pop in more often.

Would second the rhubarb idea....you need the leaves which are not usually on bunches you can buy....do you know anyone who has rhubarb growing in their garden?

yeah I agree about the rhubarb leaves, I let a pan of boiled eggs boil dry and pan was totally black on the bottom, boiled up some rhubarb leaves and came up good as new, mind you, kitchen stank of burnt boiled eggs !0

I think you're very close to the answer with the spoon. Between the salty water, the aluminium pan and the (very likely steel) spoon you'd have caused a galvanic reaction. The aluminium has oxidised. You may be able to clean off the oxidation if it's thin.0
