Help please my pan's gone black!

I've got a great big old pan I've had for years, and have cooked all sorts in it.

It's never been silver gleaming clean inside, but today I cooked two gammon joints in it for a couple of hours and it went black!

Normal washing up won't get it clean, and using a brillo pad is only scratching it off.

What's suddenly caused this and why?

How, if at all, can I get it clean?

Thank you.

At least the gammon joints were cooked in boiler bags and they look gorgeous.

i'm sure it's perfectly fine to use but you could try some warm water and denture tablets, or some of that oxy stuff for washing and leave it to soak

Was it just plain water in it? That often leaves a residue.. it wil go after a few more uses I should think.. my pasta pan does the same if I boil the water for a few minutes before adding pasta.

It looks like a chemical reaction to the boiler bags maybe ?

I used to get the same when I boiled eggs in one particular pan.

Try soaking it in either two denture cleaner tabs or some bio washing powder, but rinse well or you'll taste it for a long time.:D

If the dentures tablets don't work you could always try white vinegar and bicarb of soda....yes it will fizz for a little while but it's good for cleaning just about everything else :D

I wrecked my favourite pot recently trying to make spun sugar (ha ha) and it was destined for the bin. Soaking in bleach and a good old scrub brought it back to its former glory. I know there's bound to be a thread for you.... only my brain cant find it right now..... let me think!

ALternatively washing powder may do a good job on it.....

    Zip :)
