Cramping pains after miscarriage?

Just wanted to check that what I am going through is normal I guess.
I had a miscarriage on Saturday at less than 6 weeks and today, 5 days on, I am experiencing horrible cramps, similar to period pains but more severe and they come and go if that makes sense.
Is this normal?
Sorry if it's a silly question
Thanks for reading

You should phone a doctor or NHS Direct (0845 4647) if you have any doubts.

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

I can appreciate that but I feel it is still best to speak to somebody in a medical capacity about this. Some pain is normal after a miscarriage but there are complications that can arise and if pain is ignored as being normal there is always the unfortunate chance that it could be a symptom of something vastly more serious.

It could be because some part of the pregnancy has been retained and thus your body is trying to expel it by contracting. I had terrible cramps after giving birth and they stopes when I passed a large clot. You do need to see a doctor they might want to do an ultrasound to make sure that the womb is completely empty as retaining a clot or remnant of placenta etc can cause a very serious infection and as with any serious infection if ignored completely such things can become life threatening. Don't mean to be dramatic just trying to emphasise why you do need to see a Dr just to ensure that everything is ok and there's still there that could be causing the pains.

I havent had a miscarraige - but after giving birth to my first I retained some of the placenta - I had the most horrendous experience. and that was approx 6 days after giving birth too. I would urge you to get medical advice ASAP!

I've had two miscarriages and with both of them the severe pain was only for the first day, andi it was much better after a couple of days, then the bleeding continued for a week.

If you have severe pain still, then you may have what they call retained products of conception (horrid term) and might need an operation to remove them which used to be called a D&C.

And I am very sorry for your loss.

  • I had a DNC (?) after my first miscarriage. After a few days, the pain and bleeding calmed down. About day 5, though, the pain was terrible and I was bleeding (including clots) like crazy. I called NHS Direct and they gave me good advice. They were also really nice...didn't make me like I was asking stupid questions at all.

Your body has been through a hellish ordeal...seek help, even just for your own peace of mind.

Good luck, and keep yourself safe x
