Insolvency redundancy questions

I've just been made redundant due to company going into insolvency.
My first thought is that I will try to go self-employed - the area I work in is very specialist so general job hunt is looking gloomy.
I understand I can claim insolvency payment for redundancy and possibly some for "in lieu of notice" (not sure on this bit). I should be due 16 weeks payment.
My question is, what am I supposed to do about signing on/JSA etc if I plan to go self employed once I've sorted things out a bit. It will take some time to do that. Do I sign on anyway? What happens with the "in lieu of notice bit" if I go self employed but don't earn initially (my work takes time to pay - it's project based).
Grateful of any advice. Will provide additional info if you need. Am still in shock at the moment!

Hi There,
..yo will need an "oficial" letter from the liquidator (terminator), that you can then take to the job centre. You may need to call them first and they will get relevant info from you and book an appointment for you to see them, (I think they are probably quite busy at the moment). You will be entitled to any wages that you have not received from the company...I think up to a maximum of 12 weeks. Then you will be entitled to statutory redundancy, (plent of web site calculators for this), plus you may be entitled to up to 90 days "in lieu of notice assuming you did not get any...plus if you have a union they may put in for a "protective award"...ie 90 days money assuming again that the company did not give you 90 days notice and more than 19 people went.
(in similar situation myself..along with 100 colleagues...)
...good luck!!.."It's everybody's fault but mine...."0 -
Go into Jobcentre and ask about registering (they may refer you to a phone to use to speak with call centre staff). Do this even if you don't have paperwork yet - so that your claim can start as soon as possible.loosemoose wrote: »I've just been made redundant due to company going into insolvency.
