HELP! - dont know what we are going to do

mr mob started a new job a couple of weeks ago. provided his passport (out of date) as proof of id along with his birth certificate and his mums marriage certificate (as his surname at birth is different to what it is now). he also provided his P45 which is proof of his NINO.

he should have been paid on the 30th november but wasn't because he wasnt yet on the payroll. today he was told they cant put him on the payroll as his passport was out of date and before they can pay him he has to get a new passport!

had his birth cert. had the surname he uses now on it it would have been ok, despite them seeing his mums marriuage certificate.

they cant even give him a sub or money from the float and are insisting that its the law.

so what are we meant to do? i got shafted on my tax this month (cant speak to payrol until monday) and only work part time sio dont earn a great deal. yes we get ctc including child care costs but that goes on childcare and the small remainder on the little bit of shopping i get throughout the week (like milk for chops, milk for us, bread etc for lunch).

we have to pay £400 inn rent and council tax this month. plus other bills like gas and electric etc.

i dont know what we are going to do. plus the fact he will have to pay for a passport that he doesnt really need other than to proove who he is.

any ideas?

do i put in a claim for hb and ctb based on my income for just a few weeks until he gets paid?

is it really law and can they do this?

I have never heard of this being the law, though I suppose ID requirements are different for different employers. Has he got a driving licence to offer as ID? I think that should be accepted along with the other ID. If you dont get any joy it maybe worth explaining the circumstances and speaking to someone in authority at his new employers.

I find that attitude and demand complete boswellox. Many people don't have a passport, don't need one and don't want one.

I think your OH's new employers are in danger of making total prats of themselves over this.

I'd speak to the CAB, and possibly write to your MP and local paper as well. I'm gobsmacked for once  .
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

This link may explain it Anthillmob. Scroll down to the section headed "What Proof Will Employers Need". It explains that even people from the UK have to prove their nationality to new employers, hence Mr Mob's new one asking for a valid passport. There's also a link to information on proving your right to work, although that's down at the moment.

cheers for te link. am gutted the link within is down.

ive given him charlies birth certificate to take in. it states his name and place of birth.

had his birth cert had his current surname then there wouldnt be a problem. but hes provided his mums original marriage certificate (when his surname changed).

as we are both employed would we still be eligible for money from the social fund? not a route i want to go down but....

thank god i paid into a crimbo club and have got all of the crimbo presents. othewise it would be a very bleak crimbo. however charlies birthday is in 2 weeks and we wanted to have a little get together for family with nibbles. looks like they will have no nibbles now.

i know, pathetic thing to mention but i am really really angry.

you should still be entitled to a crisis loan if your working, if you have no money for food, etc.
