Using own vehicle to pick up employers goods but breakdown
Options
Hi, my step-son works part time for a large electrical retailer, he was asked to drive to another store in his own vehicle to pick up a TV and was given £15 for petrol. On the way back he broke down - who should be paying for the repairs?
I'm sure that they are mean't to do this and the store manager has gone against company procedure.
Any info would be very grateful.
Cheers

but he would of broken down anyway, so whats your point?Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)
new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,0000 -
How about the fact that he wouldn't have broken down working for his employer because the mileage he would have travelled home is a 1/3rd less!
Don't they have to check insurance etc too0 -
Is his car insured for business use ?
I expect not, so he broke the law there.0 -
His insurance wouldnt cover him as he was using his car for work related purposes & not travelling to & from a place of work.
I can see you moral argument but the car would have broke down at some point al be it the next day on his way to work.You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.0 -

I use to travel for between sites for work and used my own car, I was given an allowance to do what I wish with...ie pay petrol, insturance or RAC cover. It was over and above what I would have spent in petrol as it then worked out about 47p per mile so I used it for break down cover.
If you are employed to travel between sites it should all be done properly (you get your money and sort the rest out ) but if you are NOT employed to travel then the best option is normally to just say "no, I don't have the insurance ..end of"
But as it stands the break down is down to him and not the company cos it is not their fault and nothing to do with them, chances are the car would have packed up sooner or later anyway.

That actually depends on the type of insurance, I had business and my husband does now even though he does not travel for work. It worked out at £15.00 per year more and meant that if asked he can travel (they do get asked now and again)There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Just be glad he didn't have an accident. I doubt he has business insurance...
His employers are in no way liable for the costs incurred by him for breaking down. He could have always said "no"If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Social, domestic and pleasure insurance covers you for travelling to work and back.
Business insurance is only needed for any journeys carried out in relation to work. That's what I meant..Travel to work is covered by normal insurance but site to site requires business.
I tend to think in terms of travel to work and travel for work as being different things..I might be alone in that thoughThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Thanks for the comments - I'm currently on hold while the HR dept look to see if he has broken procedures & the legal side of it
Right - he should know not to ask (as I thought) and legally he was not inusured by either car on employers laibility should something have happened.
Thanks again everyone - quick replies0
