tax return mistake??

Hi there,

I was asked to do a tax return for 2010-2011 but i rang up as i didnt need to do one as im only employed. I was previously self employed but filed my final tax return for that last year.

When i called up they said is been asked to file one for this last year as id ticked on the box saying 'i didnt want any underpayment to be taken from my paye earnings' (as i was employed and self employed at the same time). This meant i would automatically be asked to file a tax return each year!

I didnt realise id ticked this box and that it would have this effect! The lady asked me twice 'so are you telling me you ticked the box in error?' to which i replied yes. So she said she would amend it and i didnt need to do a tax return for this last year.

Other than that, all the figures etc that i put it are fine, its just that box. I rang yesterday to check all had been amended ok as i hadnt heard from them, but i was told that the lady had amended it as far as she could but it had to be 'approved' by another dept which has a current back log of about 4 weeks!

Has anyone else done anything like this and have you had any probs from doing so? Im panicking now in case i end up with a big review! Ive got all documents, reciepts etc still but its just a stress i dont need and couldnt afford an accountant to help me if i did get this!

Or am i just worrying over nothing?

You may still have to do a return for 2010/11

Note down your employed work and state that you are no longer self employed - did you tell the HMRC when you stopped being self employed? You will probably get tax returns for a while so fill them in and send them off (if you fail to fill them in then you will get fined). The thing with tax returns is that you may still get them when you are in employment.

An accountant doesnt cost that much and would certainly be worth the money for the amount they would save you - remember its a professional fee that can be offset against tax.

There is no point in getting into a panic.

Hiya, thanks for your reply. I dont mind doing another one this year if i need to - it would be simple enough as for the last year ive only had earnings from employment. I did tell them when i ended self employment and also imput this into my last tax return. The lady said because I had ticked that box it auto generated a letter telling me to file a return so hopefully it will simple enough to change. But if not ill just do one for this last year.
Ive never had an accountant becuase i was never earning enough to even pay for it. I made a loss every year and never made a profit. So it was never worth my while getting an accountant as there was no tax to save if that makes sense.
Ill just have to wait and see what happens I guess. I am a worrier! But your're right, there no point getting in a panic about it. x
