MBNA demand for money

I had an MBNA card years ago and haven't used it for several years. I received an online demand from them for £150 this week. I have never done business with them online. I emailed back saying it was either a scam or an error. Has anyone else had the same ?

    • You use the term "online demand". Do you mean e-mail?
    • Did it say "Dear Customer" or did it use your correct name?
    • Did it have a link to click? If so, was that link a genuine MBNA website?
    • Did it include the last few digits of your old CC number as confirmation?
    • Did it have grammatical mistakes or misspellings?
    • Did you actually close the account or simply stop using it?

Thanks Fruit & nut. Its from 'Customer Services' and addresses me by my name. It has link which looks legit. No grammatical mistakes/misspellings. I simply stopped using the account. Its informing me that I have missed 4 payments. I have not had any correspondence with them for far longer than that. I will have to check the numbers but I may even have thrown all details away since it was so long ago and I have moved house in the last few months and even more reason why I would have thrown old details away.
  • Did you have any Continuous Payment Authorities associated with your old account? Maybe some organisation has activated this and MBNA have paid it?

MBNA seem to have let things slide if they claim you have missed 4 payments. Good luck in getting to the bottom of this.

You need to get a statement but it could be continous payment authorities for things like RAC, magazines, payment insurance or card protection.
Did you move house? or change email?

You need to find out what it is for, but do not acknowledge the debt.

Oh and go to them direct, not via any links in the email.

You emailed them? If it is a scam, that will definitely stop them!!
How about a quick phone call?

    There are 3 options
1/ this is a scam. You just let them know that this email address is live and they will sell it on and you will be targeted for milion scams from now on
2/ there was fraudulent transaction on the account, but as you no longer open the statements you haven't noticed.
3/ there was continuous authority on the account you forgot about and it got paid but coz you no longer open the statements you haven't noticed.

Either way email is too slow, give them quick ring and find out!

Am very fed up. It turned out to be a Virgin credit card I had thought I had paid off before I moved house. (MBNA own Virgin or the other way round) When I moved I forgot all about it so its my own daft fault. I owed £200 on it and now I have to pay £150 in late fees. Beware everyone the dreaded bl..... credit card wins again.

Thanks for your input all the same.

You could still write to them and ask them to reduce the fees (not interest) on the basis they are excessive and disproportionate considering the amount owed. Ask them to justify the fees by reference to the costs incurred by them, else refund the excess.

Worth a try if you are so minded.
