Driveway Gates

Hello, a couple of questions about driveway gates. I plan to install metal driveway gates across a span of 8 feet 3 inches and I would like them about 4 foot high. All gates are different so I imagine that I will have to have ones specially made or second hand ones altered by a local forge.

My first question is what should I be paying for new ones? Also I have noticed that some people cement iron posts in to support the weight of the gates. I was hoping to drill and support into the existing pillars that I have. They are single skin brick squares. There are already drill holes in the piers which I suspect may have been for wooden gates. I have already threaded that my drive is on a slant and kind posters have said that I would need to use offset bottom hinges to allow me to open inwards. Many thanks.

As you're going to need something 'non-standard' you're definitely going to be looking at getting a company in to do, so my advise would be to get a few quotes in, and see what they say about the fixings. You may find that you'll need the extra posts, which would make the driveway narrower.

We had some gates fitted at our old house, and from memory, they were around £350-375 fitted for some that were about 3'6'' high with finials and extra dog bars in the bottom half.

I can't give an exact price as we had railings done at the same time, but I can remember working out a rough price as the railings were priced by the metre.

We had sturdy brick posts to fix to, but had to have the old fixings (wooden gate) cut off, and new ones put on.

They were certainly a lot more affordable than I thought they'd be, and much better made that the flimsy ones you get at DIY stores.
