Van hire deposit

I'm going to need to hire a van for a day soon, but won't have access to a Credit Card.
Can I use a Debit Card - will they take all the deposit (Whatever that may be), or just the detail.

EDIT: Just tried to book with Arnold Clark and it does say Debit Card can be used, and they'll hold as deposit. So hopefuly no money taken unless I damage the van?

From what i have read they do need to take the money then refund it. Thats why some pay at pump
petrol stations do not accept some debit cards.

The machine would need to debit £100/ £150 and then refund what you dont buy. Its easier for them
with a credit card as the funds are just withheld from your max limit.

In my experience rental companies do take the money when you sign the paperwork and refund on return of the vehicle. I guess they need to ensure the funds are available in your acccount should damage occur whilst you have the vehicle.
