Lloyds MasterCard (Limit & PPI)

My boyfriend has a credit card from Lloyd's since i can remember. First it was a Visa then 2 or 3 years back it changed to a MasterCard.

The credit card limit was in the beginning around £1200 (probably even less) which would have suited us perfectly and would have been easy to manage.
But since around 2003 the limit has been gradually increased and is now at £6600

when we were around £2400 limit and struggled to pay it off because my boyfriend wasn't able to work anymore due to his medical condition they offered us a loan to pay off our credit card debts.

there they said we can't have PPI because of his medical condition and because he was already just getting disability living allowance and income support.

a couple of years later (meanwhile credit limit at £3400) the loan was increased to pay off again the credit card debt.

i have to add we are still paying off this loan. it doesn't seem to become any smaller because they keep increasing the interest on it.

today the new credit card statement and to my surprise i found they had sold payment protection cover for it even so they knew all along that my boyfriend will never again be able to work as his medical condition will get worse the older he gets.

i am just wondering if it was legally right for them to increase the credit limit knowing about the disability. as well as selling PPI for the creditcard but not for the loan.

i do recall when he had to give up work and he asked about the credit card they said no they wouldn't cover it because it was a previous medical condition. so why did they keep charging him

i'm sorry for talking that much but we are really worried because the credit card debt has gone up to £6000 and we still are nearly £3000 in debt with our loan.

i just like some advice on what we should do. i know i will have to write to Lloyds to ask how much of payment protection cover we have been charged over the years and ask that back.

but is there also something we can do about those constant limit increases we never asked for which brought us more and more in debt??

i hope i made some sense :o

So he got a credit card with PPI when he had a job (correct me if I'm wrong, surely this insurance hasn't just mysteriosuly appeared now).

Then he got ill (did he claim?).

Then he got a loan without PPI because he didn't qualify.

So how was the PPI mis-sold if he had a job when he took it out?
i am just wondering if it was legally right for them to increase the credit limit knowing about the disability
He didn't have to accept the increase or spend it. Failing to treat him equally to others because of his disability is also illegal.

Did he ever advise the credit card side of things that he wasn't working?

Spend less money than you earn.
i know i will have to write to Lloyds to ask how much of payment protection cover we have been charged over the years and ask that back.
On what grounds? You might actually succeed, but he bought the policy when he had a job and doesn't seem to have thought to cancel it.
but is there also something we can do about those constant limit increases we never asked for which brought us more and more in debt??
Yes. You pick up the telephone, you dial the number on the letter / statement offering the change in limit and say "No thank you".

    Easy, innit!
  • well, how can i explain he suffers from Scoliosis since he was in his teens. had major spinal surgery. but tried to live a life as normal as possible and worked as good as he could.
it never came into his mind that one day he wouldn't be able to work anymore or maybe rather he tried not to remind himself.

he took out a small loan £500 i think it was in 2003 and he was sold PPI with it. when it came to the point he couldn't work anymore 2004 or 2005 he wanted to use this PPI to pay off his loan. they said no sorry we can't because of your previous medical condition. when he asked them to pay him what he paid for a useless insurance they told him sorry you didn't tell us you had a medical condition.
how on earth did he know that had something to do with it they never explained it. they NEVER asked.
you need to know that my boyfriend is very trustworthy. he thinks those people working in banks will know best and do the best for you. but it seems they never ask the right questions.
and to be honest i didn't know either we were paying PPI for the credit card. i am not a finance genius nor do i know all the laws and everything. only recently when all this about PPI was on TV but even then i thought it only mattered for loans and there i knew we didn't pay any.
only today we realized that it was on the credit card statement.
i do not know if he was sold it when he first received (i mean received they were chucking credit cards after you 8-10 years ago) the credit card or when it changed from Visa to MasterCard.

But one thing i know for sure Lloyds TSB knows that my boyfriend is disabled.

but for how much they care shows that i have been pestered for 2 years with loan offers by Lloyds even so they know exactly that i don't have any income whatsoever

every month £130 is swallowed by this loan. that's almost a quarter of what he gets in disability living allowance and those few quid income support :( so you use the credit card to survive. and believe me we don't shop at M&S.
but it's like a spiral you just can't get out of it once you're trapped.
