Hi, can any one help me please?
I have an oven that can be used on "normal oven" mode or "fan oven" mode. Often in cooking instructions it will give cooking times for both types of oven and for a fan oven the cooking time is shorter. Is it more economical to cook things using the fan oven mode for a shorter period of time, or cook it for longer but without the fan option?

I have an oven which has both options, also. The fan distributes the heat around the oven evenly and because you reduce the temperature/cooking time I would have thought it was a more economical way to use the oven.
I always use the fan oven.

Not sure whether it's more economical or not, but with the fan on you reduce the temperature as well. I used to cook on 200 the most often, but now with a fan oven I turn it down to 180. It's supposed to be more efficient at distributing heat so the whole oven is at the same temp, not always a good thing IMO.
If you want to cook say, biscuits on the top, pie in the middle and rice pudding on the bottom, then use normal oven as the heat rises to where you want it most at the top.
Sorry for blethering on, but HTH.

Thanks to you both kathyd and pol. I am going to start using the fan oven option from now on. Thanks for the tip about using a normal oven if I want to cook various items. Cooking biscuits, a pie and rice pudding at the same time sounds very impressive to me. I am trying to be more OS and making more homemade food but haven´t quite got myself organised enough to multi-use the oven but plan to be able to do that in the future.0

My oven has several options, but I mainly use the fan. Mostly this means reducing the temperature. The higher the temperature, the bigger the difference. This is the conversion that came with my (Neff) oven:
"Normal" gas; "Normal" Centigrade;Fan
1/4;100;100
1/4;110;110
1/2;130;120
1;140;130
2;150;140
3;160;150
4-5;180-190;160
6;200;170
7;220;180
8;230;190
9;250;200
Hope that helps0
