Deciding on a company name?

How do people decide on a company name. I am trying to rack my brains on what would be best but having trouble thinking of something I like. Was hoping to get some inspiration on how you decided on your company name.

  • Call your company EXIT so your name is always up in lights or AAAA so it appears in the front of directories.:p

I don't think there's such a thing as a perfect name, if that thought helps. what one person will find clever and memorable another person will think irritating and to be avoided ...

It is worth going for something which will be easy to remember and spell for a website. The DandA optician would be hard to find if we all had to remember how they spelled their full names!

Which raises another interesting point... If having a website is important to you, make sure that the domain name is free and get it registered before you start up a company of that name. Also make sure there are no companies of the same name registered at Companies House, you can do this online at www.companies-house.gov.uk and click on the webcheck service icon. While you're there, make sure there are no companies of the same name that have gone out of business, so there's no confusion with yours.

It's even harder to find now that they've been taken over by Boots.

originally we had hoped to setup a garden business, being on the norfolk / suffolk border we went for "borders" however we chose a different option and started a cab company, being private hire we couldnt have the word cab or taxi in our name, the local town/village name (brandon / weeting ) had gone, my surname was far to long so we went back to borders without the S and became border cars, believe it or not someone else had the same idea at the same time. within days actually and he started a business called border building supplies.

I also agree with an earlier post find a name then check if the domain is available, if not think again.
