New line Connection Cost?? or free

Hi,

Can someone clarify do all companies charge a connection cost?

I would like o2 home phone and broadband. However, £80 cost for connecting my new phone line.

Do any companies offer it for free? o2 website says its free for existing customers (mobile) however they said the connection to exchange is not (is that false advertising?) or have I misinterpreted what it stated?

Is there any company that offer a line, connection and charges at a decent price?

If there's an exisiting, but 'stopped' (dial tone present but outgoing and incoming calls not possible), BT line, BT will usually reconnect* f.o.c.

I don't know of any other provider which does that.

    * A 12 month line rental contract will be necessary.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I'll check that, if there is a tone.

What are the alternatives if there's no tone?

None, really. There are only two options for UK customers, BT & Virgin, ot Kingston in Hull & Beverley. VM often waive reconnection depending on package and commitment. On BT, they are more easily able to absorb the cost in exchange for a minimum commitment term, even if Openreach have to be called in. For all the other virtual providers, as it is Openreach who do the work, they need to be paid regardless so these firms are ofen unwilling to shoulder this cost leaving the customer to pay.

BT is your best option, then if you want to switch after the minimum term, you do it with a working line, and there's no charge...
